The Arrival

Our last two weeks in the States were wonderful, but, like much loved vacations, too short. We certainly didn’t get to see everyone we wanted to before we left, but it will make visits back all the more special.

Day of travel went as smoothly as possible, for which I am thankful. Checking in Lily (the pup) was easier than I anticipated, just a long process. We boarded our flight without a hitch, and were excited to have an entire four seat row to ourselves. To say we spread out is an understatement. Unfortunately, neither of us slept very well on the flight. Tristan slept for maybe an hour before we landed. I wasn’t able to sleep at all.

We came through customs without issue. However, when it came time to collect Lily, there was some confusion, but we got our sweet girl! Lufthansa is definitely the way to go! We met my nursing director/co-sponsor and we set off to our TLA.

Our sponsors have been absolutely amazing. I was a bit worried before we were assigned one as I’d heard it go either really well, or not. Our sponsors, however, have gone above and beyond. We had a welcome basket waiting for us in the car with lots of yummy German treats for Tristan, Lily, and I. And our other sponsor had welcome goodies waiting for us as well. They are both utterly sweet and wonderful, and I already feel like part of the team. Another team member has set up a meal train for us while we get settled!

For our TLA, we used a popular company with a well established and good reputation: TDYHomes. Our apartment is the perfect size and in the perfect location. We are able to quarantine here in comfort. They have been exceptionally accommodating and helpful. As a surprise, my mother contacted them to have a Christmas tree purchased and set up for us for our arrival. Their representative was so excited to show us!

Tristan had a tough time last night. Being exhausted, his feelings of homesickness were exacerbated and he, simply put, melted down. It was heartbreaking to hear his crying. I was able to get him into a nice hot bath, which settled him some. Then his buddy called him for some gaming. He’s been better since, but hasn’t been able to sleep much. Like his mother (ahem!), he forgets to see the delightful things, the fun, the newness. He allows for the pain and the darkness to seep in unchecked. He’s completely smitten with the ability to open or tilt the windows/doors, though, and can’t wait to get out of quarantine so he can explore the area. We saw some kids his age while walking Lily also. His favorite teacher also allowed him to sit in on her class since he isn’t completely unenrolled from his school back home yet. Routine and gentle reminders are going to be important here.

I have a good feeling about all of it: about my decision; about my new job; about everything!

    • Thank you! It will definitely take some time, but we’ve got this! Today was better than yesterday for him and we had a special drop off of donner and baklava for dinner. Then watched his favorite movie: The Peanut Butter Falcon. ❤
